Literacy as a Weapon (LAAW) Scholars invest in the cultural literacy, awareness, and understanding of historical race-based public policy and its continuing impact on inequities in Hampton Roads.
LAAW transforms racial equity and opportunity by investing in youth understanding of how the present social, political and economic societal conditions faced by African Americans came to be through reading and dissecting the book,
The Color of Law. LAAW Scholars will examine the legacy of racially explicit local, state, and federal law and practices and their impact on current societal inequities within Hampton Roads with an emphasis on Norfolk .
LAAW Scholars will create multimedia and traditional tools to increase understanding and awareness of policy and practices establishing justice and equity pathways for now and the future.
