2018 Read 2 L.E.A.D. Schools Confirmed!
2018 will make eight years of providing culturally affirming books to Title I elementary school libraries. That means nearly 2,000 books, 15 schools and thousands of beautiful babies. Through all of that, I continue to get excited each year! If you’ve been following our movement you know this event as our annual Youth Book Drive. Well, we changed the name to Read to L.E.A.D. (Learn Everything About the Diaspora) because this is more than just a book drive. The impact extends far beyond delivering books. Plus, we’ve added exciting, new components to this initiative. Anyway, I don’t mean to get all Puff Daddy, P-Diddy, Brother Love on you about the name change. Names are important but let’s get to the point of this post. Our two confirmed schools are **insert drum roll** Ingleside Elementary in Norfolk, VA and Thurgood Marshall Elementary in Chesapeake, VA!
Norfolk is where this mission and vision began. Ingleside’s principal, Dr. Alana Balthazar was the principal of P.B. Young Senior in 2011 when we did our first book delivery. We look forward to reuniting with her and this new group of babies to create the same type of magic.
Over the summer, we had the pleasure of conducting a literacy camp and other events with the Chesapeake Redevelopment and Housing Authority. The babies in the camp attended Thurgood Marshall. After working with them and witnessing their enthusiasm for culturally affirming literature, we knew we had to expand to Chesapeake in 2018. We look forward to working with Principal Lopez and her staff to bring these gems to our Chesapeake babies.
We look forward to adding more schools but right now we are elated about these two. We also appreciate all support that we have received throughout the years to make this possible. This is a Village effort and a testament to what we can do when we come together to provide for our youth. This is the point where I go do my happy dance. Stay tuned for more updates!
